Everybody that ever had to deal with the rejection of a loved one can agree to this: a broken heart hurts. Now, scientists did research this pain. In the first research, scientists are able to establish how it is possible that a broken heart hurts.

In the second research, scientists claim that a broken heart can cause real heart problems.

A broken heart causes pain

The first research was done with people that needed to play computer games. The game was focused on rejecting the people at a certain point. The people don’t know what is going on, but the reactions on the rejection at a certain moment are registered by the use of scans.
On a brain scan you can clearly see that the part of the brain that is activated when you are dealing with physical pain, also responds when a person deals with social seclusion. However, that does not mean that a broken arm gives the same pain as a broken heart.
With this research, scientists want to show how important it is that people feel socially accepted. As well, based on this research new medicine can be developed that cure cases of extreme fear in social life or depression. Research has shown before that when there is pain, something "is not right".
You can compare it with sort of a basic signal that goes of in the brain’s cerebral cortex. As well, the crying of a child gives this reaction in the brain of the mother. However, this is the first time that it is for sure that the same signal is given after rejection.

Divorce can lead literally lead to a broken heart

The second research involved 10,000 men and women that were researched over a period of ten years. The conclusion is that 11.6 percent of the divorced women have heart problems. For remarried women the number is 10.9 percent. For women that stay with their men their whole lives, this percentage was 8.7 percent.
At the age of 60, 33 percent of the divorced women had heart problems, against 22 percent of the married women. According to scientists, this is the result of emotional damage that comes from a divorce, and this has, especially for women, physical consequences.
Why divorced men get less health problems, is unclear. A theory is that for women a harmonious family life is more important than for men.
