Unfortunately there isn't much advise to give here relating to what he might think. Only he knows that. Or rather, is my impression from your post, he doesn't know himself what he would want.

The only thing I think you should ask of yourself is, would you be willing to go through these ups and downs (being best-friend - being girl-friend - being best-friend - being girl-friend) until he finally knows what he wants and take the risk or rather go on with your life and find someone stable?

Sit back and ask yourself a couple of questions.

1. What direction has the relationship be going in? Has it been going up or down!

2. How long have you all been in a relationship has it been 5 years or 5 months. Time plays a big factor in weather people sometimes need space or not

3. Prior to this happening had he been acting strange or out of character?

4. Did anything serious happen with in his family or around him something that could of effected him to the point where he didn't wanna drag you into the situation.

Find those thing's out and you should have a better understanding of what's going on.
