I'm so sorry that I don't meet your standards. I read the books (including the Simarillion and the Unfinished Tales) when I was in high school or shortly thereafter and haven't touched them since. I didn't see the movies.

Well, you're certainly welcome to try, but I must say, speaking only for myself, that it is often a futile task. I keep trying it--telling myself what to do--and then finding myself not following through appropriately. I frustrate myself that way... But maybe you'd have better luck!

No, no! Make copies of yourself and come visit! You too can be assimilated!

Don't totally agree with you on this one. I saw him in something else, which I now can't remember, and still liked his style.

Having to choose, I'd go with Aragorn as played by Viggo as my preference though.

the following for your consideration:

On a completely serious note, we talked about this very issue last week in the group for people who've recently lost a parent at my shul.
(We meet weekly; just started 2 weeks ago). One of the men was wearing the black pin-on button with a black ribbon that observant
Jews wear to show they are recently bereaved. At the funeral service the ribbon is intentionally torn, to substitute for the actual rending of your garments in grief that is described in the Torah. (I think it's in Torah, it might be somewhere else.)

He talked about the tearing, and how it represents the change in your life. You may mend the tear, but your life will still not be the same as it was before your mother or father died. You will not be the same; you'll never go back to who you were before your mother or father died. (Or both; at least two of the people in the group lost both their parents in the last couple of years.)

The grief itself is scarring me. My self-image didn't include this kind of response, the intensity and uncontrollability of the sadness.

That makes sense. IME&O it's deeply dissonant with a lot of NorAm cultural messages, but it makes a great deal of sense.

Aiy. I know this is common, especially if the parents are still married to one another and are both aged. I can even see where it would be in some ways a blessing for the partner who goes last, but it must feel like desolation to the children.

I admire you for opening yourself to the reality of it. I've seen what happens to people who don't, and that way is not for you.

<grin> I like his non-fiction a whole lot better than his fiction. I didn't read Narnia until I was an adult, and already in seminary. So I wasn't able to enter into it fully. Still a pretty darn good story. I liked the interactions between the siblings, very much. Not particularly sentimental and sappy.

Me too, even. I always saw myself as more a Saxifrage Russell from

His buddy John Ronald Reuel made that sort of references, clearly, without being so blatant about it. It was actually an issue between them.

Pft. I found those in Enid Blyton too.

Seesters! So what authors are you currently reading? I'm currently looking for new authors, since they just don't write quickly enough for me and some are not writing anymore.

JLC, just because they're dead...

Aparently, turning off conflicting firewall software (I have a nice new D-Link wireless router with a firewall built-in) solved the problem. I'm Jean Luc Picard!

I can choose what observances help me deal with my grief.

I've been saying mourner's kaddish when I go to services; it really helps.

DUH. LOTR takes place in the THIRD Age. Galadriel was born in the
FIRST age, during the time of the Two Trees! Sheesh! Tolkien wrote more than Lord of the Rings, ya know!

And oh. my. gawd. Only a MOVIE fan would write "elfin." All true BOOK fans know that JRR Tolkien wrote "elven" throughOUT his entire opus, including all of the Letters, Unfinished Tales, and the 15-volume
History of Middle Earth, except one footnote in the Silmarillion, which isn't even canonical. No true book fan would ever write "elfiNO

[Please accept the management's apologies, this keyboard momentarily taken over by rec.arts.books.tolkien]

Sorry, but even one Galadriel outranks Elrond, so two of 'em ...

Oh, I certainly expect it was deliberate. (I was just reading a new novel by a friend and found references to her old apartment, my old apartment (I think) and at least one former colleague -- at least one because it was carefully worded so that it could have referred to any of three people whom the writer has previously lumped together.) It was just freaky being in a city on the opposite coast where I'm familiar with perhaps three or four locales and finding one of them lovingly described in a series of books picked up for entirely unrelated reasons.

(I got back into reading detective fiction when the person I was going out with at the time was in an academic reading group with a detective novelist and discovered that an old university acquaintance had also gone into the genre.

My mind just exploded with the idea of boring and Dickens being used in the same sentence.

I read them for the first time when I was a kid. A Jewish kid. Loved them. My favorite books for a while. I didn't know from heavy-handed and preachy. I'm wondering whether anyone who read them first as a child found them heavy-handed and preachy at the time...

I _adore_ "Tales of the City". The entire series. Sitting on my bookshelf.

I came across the first book in the remainder bin at London Drugs in
Lethbridge (London Drugs is a big, phrarmancy plus everything else chain, that runs from London Ontario west across the country. They carry some rather odd things that their marketing studies indicate their customers might buy. Like huge chunks of remaindered books and cheap televisions) I picked it up and immediiately opened to the disco club scene that Maryanne goes to with her former class-mate friend
Connie. It was _so_ late seventies. I had to have it. I bought it, and have been hooked ever since.

For a while, I thought it was my secret gem. It certainly was in
Lethbridge! It got passed around as subversive material. Which it was, in that city. I like to think that I encouraged the corruption of a few minds.
