Really? Then perhaps I need to give him a second try. I found him awfully boring when I tried to read him as a teenager. But then, I couldn't stand Shakespeare, either.

No, more like I sat through one of those fine drills you all run south of the border.
When I was a kid, we often wondered what all the fuss was about when the Buffalo stations would do their tests of the emergency broadcasting system.
We wondered, because we don't do them up here.
Probably should. A certain evening in August was a little lesson.
TB, one of those little life experiences that are compelling me to include a purchase line in this year's building budget for a back-up generator, connections and a switch in the electrical room.

And my target for (attempted) good-natured ribbing was, in fact, myself, and anyone who geeks out on Tolkien. Turns out I hit the target I was aiming at on more than one level -- Elizabeth, you have read more of Tolkien's works than I have, and you haven't even seen the Peter Jackson movies that are the object of much scorn among many hardcore Tolkien purists.

Ha! Let me tell you how freaky it was that the original office of a fictional san francisco detective was set just of couple of blocks from the house of my ex-boss, in whose basement I used to stay every few months. Whenever the author described the insane neighborhood configuration of one-way streets I could visualize just what she was talking about, and when her detective recounted pulling into a parking space no more than 50 yeards from the office door I would laugh and laugh and laugh.

I'm thinking I should give him another go. It's only fair since I reference him in lectures when I'm talking about Marx. Marx makes little sense as a critic of capitalism unless you understand the context and I know enough about Dickens to know that he provides the context.
Gives us a basis to talk about how capitalism has changed since Marx critiqued it versus ways in which Marx's critique was just simply off base.
Does that mean I have to giver "The Catcher in the Rye" another chance too? *shudder*
Because we need to add to our reading lists. Actually, I've been enjoying early 20th century writers (Edith Wharton) and was thinking to try some Virginia Woolfe.
Hated Melville, never read Austen until adulthood, liked Bronte as an adult. OTOH, I tried to read the House of Seven Gables as I was moving here. I think I'm on page 25 or so. Might have been timing, though.
Some books can live under the bed and be read a chapter at a time and others require more attention than that.
Many of my books are consumed aurally these days. I just finished listening to Paul Auster's _The Book of Illusions_ on tape. Wow. I'd read one of his other books and not been impressed (_The Moon Palace_), but now I'm going to go looking for more.
Elizabeth (sleeping dogs everywhere, but I gotta grade papers. Not fair!)

I'd tend to agree with that.
I was in high school and had also been alerted towards the symbolism (which I didn't mind at all). Probably time for a reread to see how it stacks up.

Different strokes and all that. I have very common tastes in some ways, given that Dickens was the Victorian equivalent to TV serial dramas. I love the wild plots, the crazy casts of characters, and the happy endings with all the villains either reformed or dispensed with and everyone else happily matched up. To me, it's like very well written comic books. It's also the perfect antidote to my other British favorite, the frequently depressing Thomas Hardy.
I adore Shakespeare, too, but not to read. I love going to the plays and hearing the poetry read out loud.

The picture of Galdriel whirring a sword around her head and bellowing
"There Can Be Only One!" whilst lopping off heads around her (starting with that annoying movie-Elrond) is just one of the funniest things
I've pictured in a long while.

It's more preachy than some books, but compared with _Pilgrim's
Progress_ or John Milton it doesn't seem heavy-handed. Since most 20th
C literature doesn't make that sort of reference, if you're comparing it with 20th C lit it might seem that way. Lewis is definitely writing from a Christian perspective and the Christian allegories are definitely, clearly, blatantly there.
Honestly, most literature for children that I read at the same time that
I originally read the Narnia books was more moralistic, less well-written, and less allegorical. I identified with the visiting relatives and finding a magic wardrobe and there were actually female characters who were interesting and involved, although admittedly not equal.

The calculation is for a large one. I'm supposed to receive some estimates fro the heavy equiptment company next week.
We are calculating sufficient to provide emergency power for the gas heated boiler's electronic ignitions (important, since the building is heated with hot water radiators), and emergency lighting (option A), also one with enough power for the elvator (option B - we have a lot of older owners.) If a blackout occurs in winter, we must have heat in the building. I don't care much about the refrigerator contents - that can be dealt with by packing essentials in coolers if the blackout goes beyond 24 hours. Heat, OTOH? Rather critical.
We're also looking into some other options.
I'm being a responsible board member in getting quotes for equiptment, switch installation and training for our caretaker. Our members can always vote against it, especially since we still need to do some high ticket maintenance items. It depends on how vulnerable they feel. I think Option A is going to be fairly affordable. We'll see what gets decided at the AGM.
Having a price tag always makes such decisions easier.
Be prepared, be prepared, be prepared.

I liked most of the Heinlein I ever read, but it became a bit repetitive with the later works. I wasn't too crazy about him trying to tie everything together at the end. Most of his stories should have stood on their own...
I did, however, identify with Lazarus Long.

The whole idea of people like Andy Libby living several centuries and getting a sex change just to get it on with Woodrow kinda bites, among some other ideas...
Just take a glance at the Heinlein Timeline and everything comes together except maybe for Friday and Podkayne of Mars...
I found Tolkien to be alright when I read LOTR at the age of eleven or twelve, but I moved on. I think he's just a bit overrated, but that's from the perspective of a hard science fiction fan rather than someone who's deeply into fantasy...
I've only read one Philip Roth book, and that was over twenty years ago.
It appealed to me a lot at the age of eighteen. I don't know what kind of reaction it would get out of me now. Probably the same one...
